Competitions

MAKING, BAKING, BARKING, GROWING...
THE MAIDENHEAD TOWN SHOW

Calling all budding bakers, makers, photographers, knitters, stitchers and growers...  Now is the time to get the recognition you deserve for your creative talents by entering the Town Show Competitions.

We have a variety of competition classes, all detailed below so get your thinking caps on and let your creative juices flow!

Oh and don't forget the dog show from 2pm on the day...full details at the bottom of the page!

Drop completed entry forms and entry fees in the Craft Coop Shop (near Café Nero), Nicholsons Centre Maidenhead.  All entries should be brought to the event venue (top of the High Street) on Saturday Sept. 12th from 9am -10:30 only.

Judging will take place from 11am to 12pm, when the competition tent will be closed.  From 12pm you will be able to visit the tent and see the entries. 

​Entry Fees: 50p per item – up to a maximum of £5.00 (after that, entry is free).

Competition Classes

Baking Categories:
Adults:
  1. Victoria Sponge – Must follow this recipe. Filling of your choice. 8oz (225g) butter/ margarine 8oz (225g) caster sugar 8oz (225g) self-raising flour 2 tsp baking powder 4 large eggs Mix ingredients together. Divide between two 7” sandwich tins.
  2. Own choice bake/ cake – Let your imagination go – just as long as the bake is not part of the list above, you can bake anything for us to judge.
  3. Decorated celebration cake – Fondant Icing. Your choice of celebration. Impress us with your design and decoration skills.

Junior – 16 years old and under:
  1. 6 Cupcakes – any flavour, any design
  2. Decorated celebration cake – Fondant Icing. Your choice of celebration. Impress us with your design and decoration skills.

Above bakes judged as follows: 70% presentation, 30% taste (except decorated cakes) Above bakes must be covered, either with clear film or in a box.

Crafts Categories:
Adult:
  1. Anything upcycled – we want to see you transform something unused or discarded into something new or better. This may include furniture, clothing, items for the house, etc
  2. An item of jewellery 
  3. Papercraft – including greetings cards, paper folding, or papercutting
  4. Needlework - including embroidery, cross stitch, needlepoint
  5. Any other craft

​Judging Criteria: All entries to be judged on originality, use of materials, and technique

Crochet Categories:
Adult:
  1. Item of Clothing including scarves & gloves
  2. Homeware item
  3. Blanket or Throw
Junior – 16 years old and under:
  1. Item of clothing including scarves & gloves
  2. Homeware item
  3. Blanket or Throw

Horticulture Categories:
Adult:
  1. A dish of one vegetable or fruit- to be judged on ripeness and appearance
  2. The biggest vegetable
  3. One type of flower - either a single blossom or a bunch of the same flower.
  4. Creative display using vegetables, fruit, flowers, or a combination under the theme of "Natural."
​Junior – 16 years old and under:
  1. A dish of one vegetable or fruit- to be judged on ripeness and appearance
  2. The biggest vegetable
  3. One type of flower - either a single blossom or a bunch of the same flower.
  4. Creative display under the theme of "Natural."

Rules: All produce must be home/allotment grown

Knitting Categories
Adult:
  1. An item of clothing
  2. Homeware item
  3. Blanket or Throw
Junior – 16 years old and under:
  1. An item of clothing
  2. Homeware item
  3. Blanket or Throw

Judging Criteria: Entries will be marked out of 10 possible points on each of the following:
  • Presentation, overall appearance
  • Degree of difficulty
  • Craftsmanship, skill, and technique
  • Style, design, creativity, and originality
  • Finish, use of colour, and material
  • For a total of 50 possible points

First Place, Second Place, and a Judge’s choice to be awarded in each age/ experience category.  ​If there are not enough entries in each category, the judges will have the option of amalgamating two categories.

Photography Categories:
Adult:
  1. Animals, Birds, (domestic or wild), or insects
  2. Places (landscapes or cityscapes, buildings, monuments)
  3. People
​Junior – 16 years old and under:
  1. Animals, Birds, (domestic or wild), or insects
  2. Places (landscapes or cityscapes, buildings, monuments)
  3. People

Judging Criteria: Entries will be judged on a combination of creativity and technique

Rules:
  • Any medium of camera including SLR, Compact, and Phone allowed
  • Photos taken in recent months only.
  • Any photographs of people must warrant permission if being used in later publicity
  • Editing permitted, but no manipulation to alter or distort the image.

Preserves Categories
Adult:
  1. Jam – choose your favourite recipe – judged on set and flavour
  2. A jar of jelly – a clear jelly with good flavour and colouring
  3. Chutney - made with fruit and/or vegetable using a printed or family favourite recipe.
Junior – 16 years old and under:
  1. Any jam or jelly. Can be made with supervision where appropriate. Combinations and techniques should be primarily child orientated

Rules:
  • Jars and lids must be clean and free from damage before starting.
  • Jars must be filled correctly (almost to the top, or roughly 0.5cm from the top of the jar)
  • Jams and jellies must be home and handmade by the entrant.
  • No commercial entrants or those that are made in exchange for money

Judging Criteria:
  • Appearance: Colour – characteristic of fruit, clearness; Jellies – translucence; Container – glass, practical, clean sealed lids.
  • Texture : Jelly – tender, should quiver, cut easily and retain shape, no crystals.  Jams – crushed fruit, no separation of fruit and juice and a good set.
  • Flavour: Characteristic, without excessive sweetness or overcooked flavour

Scoring: Total Score of 20 possible points
  • Flavour & aroma (7)
  • Consistency, texture, quantity (6)
  • Colour (5)
  • Container – cover, label and appearance (2)

The Dog Show
